Saliva is a fluid that is secreted from the mouth. It has been described as an "ultra-filtrate of plasma". This means that many of the same molecules that are found in the plasma are also found in saliva and at levels equivalent to those found in the blood. Saliva is also becoming a well established diagnostic tool in detecting the use of drugs. As a result, by testing saliva, one can obtain the same information on a person as one can from blood, without the need of an invasive collection. Saliva testing for drug abuse can provide information on the drug status of an individual undergoing testing. Since saliva and plasma are similar, saliva testing for drug abuse can be utilized in a variety of applications. One type of application is Detection, for reasons such as employment, heath exams, or insurance purposes. Another application is Treatment, for reasons such as diagnosis, compliance, abstinence. One last application is Forensics, for reasons such as suspicion, DUI, evidence investigation. Over the past two decades, there has been an increase in interest in the use of saliva in drug abuse monitoring.
These are some of the advantages of testing with saliva vs. other methods:
- Subjects are spared the discomfort of vein punctures
- No risk of infection
- No need for staff training, lower costs
- Eliminates the issue of protection of privacy
- Eliminates adulteration during sample collection
