Adulteration Testing (Specimen Validity Tests)o:p>
Illegal drug users go to extremes to avoid being “caught” when given a urine test. They will tamper with the specimen to avoid getting a positive result for drugs. They may add substances to the urine like water, soap, salt, or household cleaning supplies. They may also swallow certain substances like pickle juice, vinegar, mega doses of vitamin C or aspirin, to name a few. This is called adulteration or tampering of a specimen. Specimen validity tests can be very helpful in showing if adulteration has occurred. These tests can check the color of the urine, nitrate levels, temperature, creatinine and pH levels. It cannot test for age or gender of the donor. Adulteration can be kept to a minimum by following some suggestions. For example, ban any bags or purses from the place the person is giving the sample, be aware of any unusual noises behind the door, remove all cleaning products and avoid access to water. Adulteration testing can be used in a court trial and by employers seeking a drug-free workplace.
